Giving Thanks to God

George Washington was sensitive of giving thanks to God along with the US congress in 1789 and asked for His blessings upon our newly founded nation and national constitution. George Washington’s Thanksgiving Proclamation was the first proclamation made for the nation. Washington was sensitive to choose this not only because it was a Thanksgiving to God for His blessings, but also he, being a southerner, was consciously choosing a tradition which had begun in New England, thereby beginning a tradition of looking to the acknowledgment of God by our founders whether they were from the North or South.

Thanksgiving this year is exactly 220 years to the day of that first proclaimed Thanksgiving of our new nation. I think the words which Washington wrote then are just as appropriate now, and perhaps even more critical. Here’s part of that proclamation for you to enjoy. In spite of the crises we face we have a lot to be thankful to God for.

“Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanksgiving and prayer, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness: Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies”

Wishing you a very blessed and Happy Thanksgiving.

Rev 7:12, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom, Thanksgiving and honor and power and might,
Be to our God forever and ever. Amen.”
